The Signal for Help is a simple hand gesture designed to alert others when someone is in danger or experiencing distress, particularly in situations of domestic violence. It was created in April 2020 by the Canadian Women's Foundation as a response to the increase in domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdowns, which led to people being isolated in potentially unsafe environments.
The gesture is as follows:
Raise one hand with your palm facing the camera or person.
Fold your thumb down towards the center of your palm.
Close your fingers over the thumb, creating a fist.
This gesture is easy to perform, even in situations where a person may not be able to speak freely or is at risk of drawing attention to their need for help. It can be used in video calls, during interactions with people in person, or even as a subtle signal for someone who is in a dangerous or controlling situation.
If the gesture is seen by someone, it can serve as a signal that the individual is in immediate need of help, allowing the witness to take appropriate action, such as offering assistance or contacting authorities. The Signal for Help was developed to raise awareness and provide a non-verbal means for individuals to reach out for support when they may not be able to speak openly about their situation.
