Pennsylvania child abuse data during Child Abuse Awareness Month

Under Pennsylvania’s child abuse laws, 32,075 people were charged in 36,386 child abuse cases between 2019 to 2023, resulting in 10,915 case convictions. Of those defendants who were charged in child abuse cases, 56% were between the ages of 19-35 and 23% were charged with endangering the welfare of children.

Kayden’s Law: Strengthening Child Safety in Custody Cases

Kayden’s Law makes important changes to the way Pennsylvania courts handle custody decisions. One key change is the revision of the custody factors considered by the courts when making custody-related determinations. The first custody factor was changed from stating, “Which party is more likely to support the child spending time with the other party” to “Which party is more likely to keep the child safe."
This amendment places a greater emphasis on the child's safety.

New PA law that protects pets, and people, in domestic violence cases

Pennsylvania prosecutors and law enforcement officers say the number of times they see a family pet caught in domestic violence cases is too many to count. Abusers often threaten pets to torment a victim or use them as a tool to keep victims in a violent relationship. Until now judges had limited authority to protect pets when issuing restraining orders.

Commitment to Safe and Affordable Housing for Survivors

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, proclaimed by President Biden in 2021, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today issued a statement underscoring its continued dedication to support programs that address the housing needs of those impacted by gender-based violence and continue to raise awareness about HUD resources to support survivors. This work includes providing vital information to grantees and other stakeholders on the housing protections of survivors under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act

H.R. 485 reauthorizes through FY2027 and revises the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act and the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment and Adoption Reform Act of 1978 to expand services for preventing and treating child abuse.
 

The bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish uniform national standards for tracking and reporting child fatalities and near fatalities resulting from maltreatment, and develop an electronic interstate data exchange system that allows states to share information from their child abuse and neglect registries with other states.
